Albergue de Animales Rescatados
Condors, pumas, spectacled bears, monkeys and turtles rescued from traffickers, with only 3 people to care for them.
Av. de la Cultura, CuscoAbout the place
Founded on February 2, 1954 on land donated by the National University of Cusco, the shelter has spent 72 years taking in animals rescued from hunters and traffickers. Around 80 live there today: many bird species, 2 felines, 4 condors, 2 peccaries, 10 turtles, spectacled bears, foxes, monkeys, 3 alpacas, 3 llamas and more. It survives on low-cost entry fees and the university’s support.
Why they need volunteers
The site is old and too small for so many animals, and only 3 people take care of everything. Their goal is to give the animals a dignified life, rehabilitate them to return to the wild and raise visitors’ awareness. You will get to know the condor up close, practice veterinary skills if you study them, and feel the satisfaction of saving lives.
What you will help with
- Prepare food rations by species
- Feed the non-dangerous animals: small birds, baby monkeys, turtles, parrots
- Clean cages, ponds and the turtle pool
- Give the animals affection
- Guide and inform visitors
A typical day

What we ask of you
Lots of will to help and love for animals. If you have veterinary knowledge, even better.
Getting there from the volunteer house
From the volunteer house you get there by bus for S/ 1.20 each way, or by taxi for S/ 10 to S/ 15.
